They’re the photos you will always look back on as the hallmark of your high school existence. They’re the photos that mothers will frame and show to relatives, friends, and visitors alike. If you were like me, I was surfing Pinterest months before my pictures to get an idea of what I wanted. I wanted them to be perfect. The stakes were high, and so was my stress. Here’s a few things I learned when my turn came around, so maybe it won’t be as stressful for you.
Plan ahead. Surf the web, look at other senior portraits, and get an idea of what looks cool. Think of some of your favorite hobbies, maybe special talents, sports, clubs, or activities you are a part of that represent you. Two of mine were flute and softball, so I brought props that reflected those. Bring lots of options, so if you don’t like one, you can do another.
For girls, keep your makeup as natural as possible, but layer on a little more than you typically would. The camera washes you out, so put on a little more foundation and blush than you would typically wear. I recommend lighter eye shadow, something that compliments your skin tone. Don’t go too dark, the camera will pick that up too. I wouldn’t try any new techniques or color schemes the day of. Practice beforehand.
Try to eliminate tan lines, especially on the shoulder depending on the garb your school makes you wear. The camera DOES pick them up (I learned that the hard way).
Have the photographer take pictures from above if possible. The angle is SO much better. Avoid having them take it from a low angle, or looking up at you. It does NOT slim you. Learned that one from personal experience.
Be honest with the photographers. There are YOUR photos, so if you don’t like the way something looks, let them know. Obviously, try to be polite, but don’t be afraid to speak up if you want to try a different angle or pose, or tell them if something isn’t working for you.
And finally, BE YOURSELF. These photos are supposed to reflect the authentic YOU, not a model, not an Instagramer, but your true self. Don’t be afraid to embrace the things that make you different. You are one of a kind. Don’t be afraid to show it.
